Django Unchained has the sub text layered skillfully within the narrative, be it with names like Broomhilda (corruption of Brunnhilde, the German name) or the hound like looks and body language of Samuel Jhonson (as Stephen, the liberated slave), the matter-of-fact suave yet cruel to the core expressions of De Caprio (I expected an academy award for him for this portrayal), the dialogue delivery of Christoph Waltz and the Mandingo fighters who fight to death for the fun of their masters..
there is one scene in which Stephen removes the upper cloth Broomhilda wears to show the scars inflicted through whipping when she tried to escape.. Broomhilda cries aloud in pain and shame. There is yet one more lady character in the frame – Candie (De Caprio)’s sister Lara who complains about the excess noise ignoring completely what is happening.
Of course, my favourite scene is the one at the town’s pub when Franco Nero (the original Django) meets Jimmy Fox (Django in this movie).
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian (I respect him as the most important film critic internationally) has rated Torentino’s film as five-starred and his incisive analysis without platitudes is something our critics should read.
Not that I am belittling my friend Sudish who along with Bharathwaj Rangan has brought in a new genre of film reviewing here.
