Aishwarya Arun (my daughter) texted during the day, ‘appa, I am thrilled Kamal sir greeted me on my birthday’. Today is the birth day of Sir CV.Raman, KH, Aishwarya and also the day of the great October Revolution that resulted in the birth of Soviet Union under Lenin’s leadership.

நடு ராத்திரிக்குக் கொஞ்சம் முன்பான நிசி. விருந்துக்கு ஒவ்வொருவராக வர, களை கட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தது. பத்து கேமிராக்கள் விருந்து நாயகரின் ஒவ்வொரு அசைவையும், ஒவ்வொரு விருந்தாளியோடு அவர் பேசுவதையும் பதிவு செய்ய, நான் நண்பர் திரைப்படக் கல்லூரி முதல்வர் ஹரிஹரனோடு (ஏழாம் தலைமுறை இயக்குனரும் கூட) discourse in films பற்றிப் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்.
சட்டென்று பின்னால் இருந்து தோளைப் பற்றி இழுத்து நடந்தார் கமல். அதுதான் வந்ததுமே நானும் கிரேசி, ரமேஷ் அரவிந்த், மதன் ஆகிய நண்பர்களும் சேர்ந்து புகைப்படம் எடுத்தாகி விட்டதே..
எழுத்துரு பற்றி காட்டமா சண்டை போட்டிட்டிருந்தீங்களே.. வந்திருக்கார்..
தொலைவில் ஒரு ஓரமாகக் கையைக் காட்டி அங்கே போய்ப் பாருங்க என்றார்.
சாரு அண்ணா? (சாருஹாசனா?). ரெண்டு நாளாக அவரோடும் அவருடைய 75+ புத்திளைஞர் நண்பர் குழாத்தோடும் ஆக்ரோஷமாக ஆங்கிலத்தில் அம்பு விட்டு – CC to KH – விவாதித்து, திடீரென்று ஞானோதயமானது என்னவென்றால், இருவருமே ஒரே கருத்தைத் தான் சொல்கிறோம்…
சாருஹாசனை எதிர்பார்த்துப் போனால், ஓரமாக ஜெயமோகன்.
லடாக் அனுபவங்களை, இந்த எழுத்துரு விவகாரத்தை (இன்று அவருடைய இணைய தளத்தில் எழுதியிருப்பதன் சாராம்சத்தைச் சொன்னார்) பற்றி எல்லாம் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தோம்.
விருந்துக்கு வந்து விட்டு இலை, தழையை மட்டும் உண்டு போனவர் அவர் மட்டும்தான்.
பொரட்டா பிடிக்குமே, அதையும் விட்டாச்சா என்று கரிசனமாக விசாரித்தேன். கிரேசிக்கு அவரை அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்தேன். சடயரிஸ்ட் எல்லாரும் பழைய இலக்கியத்தில் நல்ல ஆர்வம் கொண்டவர்கள் முருகன் என்றார் ஜெமோ. எல்லோரும்? யோசித்து விட்டுச் சொல்கிறேன்..
சென்னைக்கே ஒரேயடியாக குடி வந்துவிடலாமே என்றேன். பத்மனாபபுரம் அவரை விடாது போல் இருக்கிறது. இந்து கோலப்பன் கூட அப்படித்தானாம். திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் இருந்தாலும், இன்று அவர்கள் ஊர் – பெயர் சொன்னார் மறந்து விட்டது – கோவில் சப்பரம், அங்கே சாமி புறப்பாடு இப்படித்தான் நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருப்பாராம்..
ஜெமோ காய்கறி தேட நான் நண்பர் பேராசிரியர் ஞானசம்பந்தனுடன் சமணர்கள் கழுவேற்றம் பற்றிக் கதைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்.. விழா நாயகரும் ஒரு நிமிடம் நின்றார்.. அவருக்கும் இது பிடித்த சப்ஜெக்ட்..

Told N.Ram at KH party last night (7th)- ‘I’ve to certainly compliment you for one thing.. for moving Meera Srinivasan to your Columbo desk. The reports she file after extensively traveling across the Tamil provinces are extraordinary.. the one I can instantly recall is the interview with the elusive KP.. reportage with a human face…’ Ram smiled and concurred, ‘ah that’s right.. she is doing a wonderful job’.

I enquired director Priyadarshan at last night (7th) KH party how he recreated Kanchipuram of 40s in his well made out movie ‘Kanchivaram’. He said the tough challenge was to have a screen play that never strays away from the documented history. The temple (inside which the silk weavers are compelled to set their looms in direct supervision of the wealthy procurers) had a river flowing by it in the distant past which the weavers used for their silk thread cleaning and dying operations. That river has now changed course and flows away from the temple area, it appears.
As Priyan wanted his narrative true to history, he had to go hunting for an alternate site which he found in the far off Karnataka, somewhere down Thalaikaveri.
He also narrated how going for short cuts out of necessity sometimes result in piquant situations. His Hindi movie ‘Gardish’ (or something else, I forgot – blame it on the grand red wine!) opens with a long shot of Mumbai from Gateway of India and then the camera trolls. As he did not have the Mumbai urban authorities’ permission to shoot that scene (security reasons, p’haps), he used a scene from one of his old Malayalam movies starring Mohanlal at the same location and having these shots sweeping across Mumbai landscape.
When the movie was screened to an invited audience (which had many Mumbai malayalees), the Hindi hero was thoroughly puzzled when the movie opened at the Gateway of India. The auditorium was reverberating with thunderous claps while he got introduced only from the next scene. When the hero enquired Priyadarshan anxiously what is so special about the first scene, the latter replied just a single word – Mohanlal. The Malayalam film footage used had Lal walking into a close up from the Gateway!

I asked Cartoonist Madhan last night (7th) while traveling to KH party – ‘what book are you currently reading?’.
Ka.Naa.Subramanian’s Poythevu!
He says, ‘I have changed a lot in my taste for books.. have developed a love for modern Tamil literature..
the last book he read – a few weeks ago – was Ambai’s short story collection. He is all in praise of the book.. quite natural.. the next book on the list he has? It is M.V.Venkatram’s Velvi Thii.
Have to introduce him to Krithika’s ‘Vasavechvaram’.

Got introduced to a quite looking, shy young man, a little plumb and short. His name is Ghibran.
Rarely I am thrilled at meeting people. But this guy is different. With just one song – Porane porane (Neha Bhasin), he captured my ears and heart.I mentioned about his music on more than one occasion to KH when VSV was released. VSV is Vaagai Sooda Vaa.
Happy he is scoring the music for Viswaroopam 2.
Do you have any Arabic music experience? I asked him and he shyly nodded his head no.
I am sure he will go places soon.
